* The Distinguished Service Cross is presented
to D'Alary Fechet, Major, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near
Vierzy, France, July 18, 1918. Major D'Alary personally led his battalion in
the attack, during which he was severely wounded in the neck by a shell
fragment. After receiving first aid he rejoined his battalion and remained in
command throughout the operation. His energy and personal heroism were
material factors in the successful attack made by his battalion on the
strongly fortified town of Vierzy.
