Both the 155th and 156th Field Regiments were drawn from the territorial regiment - the Lanarkshire Yeomanry.
On the outbreak of WW2, the Yeomanry Regiment was given the choice to become either a field artillery or anti-tank unit and the CO, Lt Col Alan Murdoch chose the
former [ironic when you read the account below about the action at Slim River]. They were based in
the small Lanarkshire market town of Lanark. The Regiment which dates back to the early 19th
century traditionally drew its strengh from volunteers resident in the County of Lanark and from
Dumfrieshire. In February 1940, the Regiment, having been augmented by regular RA non-commissioned officers, was then divided into the 155th and a new 156th Field Regiment. Batteries of the latter were based in the
Lanarkshire towns of Lesmahagow and Strathaven - usually in village or school halls as the country was being
mobilized for war and suitable accommodation was at a premium. But those two 'novice' Regiments
were quickly moulded into efficient military units. The 156th were then moved south for further training and were based at Portsmouth. In March
1941, the 155th left the port of Gourock on board the SS Strathmore bound for India. After further acclimatisation, B and C Batteries were
moved to Malaya in October just before the Japanese invasion. [A Battery remained in India and was subsequently to be assumed into the 60th Field Regiment under the title of the 'Lanarkshire Yeomanry' Battery'.] Much has been written about the disastrous Malayan campaign but whatever the opinion of historians about the effectiveness of the Commonwealth troops, there is nothing but praise for the performance of the
155th. In his book, 'Seventy days to Singapore', the American historian Stanley Falk speaking about the action at Slim River, records 'Finally, two miles below the bridge, at about 9.30, they [the Japanese] met their
match: a regiment of field artillery [B Battery of the 155th], moving forward to support the 28th Brigade. The Japanese overran part of the surprised artillery column; but then a howitzer detachment got its 4.5
inch piece into action. At a range of only thirty yards, it knocked out the leading tank and impressed upon the others the wisdom of
withdrawal'. In this action the CO, Lt Col Murdoch was killed and the Adjutant,
Captain Charles Gordon Brown, who had moved to the front line to command the detachment which took on the tanks, lost an arm but won an MC. A few days later, an other officer of the Battery, Captain
Andrew Sewell won an MC in a separate action. Despite their bravery and
determination, like all the other British and Commonwealth units which had been badly let down by the political and military hierarchy, the 155th were lead into captivity and thereafter
subjected to barbaric and despicable treatment at the hands of the Japanese. Some ended up on the infamous Burma - Thai Railway but most were shipped to Formosa [now Taiwan] where they slaved in the
hell hole of the notorious Kinkaseky Copper Mine. Meanwhile, the 156th under the command of Lt Col Younger saw action in the Middle East, Sicily, Anzio and further into Italy and ended the war in Germany. They also had an eventful time as described in
the privately printed and published book, '593 : the story of a Field Battery 1940-45' which is dedicated to Major F.W. Batey, MC and Bar, who was killed in action at Anzio. Contributing to the story was the
Battery Commander, Major E.J.H. Bates who himself won the MC at Anzio. Both those Field Regiments have a history to be proud of.
After the war, like many proud units they were merged and re merged until their identity has all but disappeared.
There is a growing interest in the history of the Lanarkshire Yeomanry and its place in military history over the years and anyone with any relevant information, or who would wish to know more, can contact
