he defended
an
isolated
trench
against overwhelming
odds.
Lieutenant
Empson
was
wounded
early
in the day on
April
30th,
and was
killed
on May
1st,
and
Lieutenant
Alcock
was finally
compelled
to
withdraw,
after
having held
this
ground
for
four
nights
and
three
days. During
this
time
no
food
or
water could
be
conveyed
to the
trench,
and at one
time
ammunition
was reduced
to
about
15
rounds
per
